Energy and environmental expertise

For a long time, Micropolis has participated in the regional development of renewable energy business operations. Micropolis has developed a close network with industry professionals and continues as an active developer of the field in collaboration with companies and research institutes.

In the Oulu Region, development of renewable-energy related business has been strongly linked with the area's energy production and the options available in it. Significant plans related to renewable energy production are underway and being implemented in our area, producing new business opportunities and need for competence.

Traditionally, the strongest competence and business activity is found in the bio-energy sector. However, future investments in wind power will increase its significance. Current plans include the construction of 60 – 70 wind farms in the Oulu Region during 2011 – 2015. Wind farm construction offers employment opportunities for several different sectors. According to calculations, the planned wind farms will provide employment for several tens of thousands of person-years during the construction and maintenance phase.

Industry development projects that Micropolis participates in as a project executor or expert include: Northern Renewable Energy, NOE – Northern Network of Cold Climate, NNCC – Northern Network of Climate Change and the Bio-energy Exchange. Micropolis also works in close collaboration with the national environmental technology competence centre programme.
